Kitchen Lighting: How to Choose Pendant Lights for the Kitchen and Dining Table

Kitchen lighting basics: three light zones

The kitchen is where everything happens: a quick breakfast in the morning, prep work at the counters during the day, long conversations around the table in the evening. A single ceiling light in the middle of the room cannot serve all of these situations equally well, which is why good kitchen lighting is always built in layers.

The work zone. Above worktops you need bright, functional light without shadows. The most practical solution is LED strips or spotlights under the wall cabinets, lighting the counter exactly where you chop and cook.

The dining zone. The table or kitchen island is where light sets the mood. Pendant lights work best here: they hang lower and create a warm, focused pool of light over the table.

Ambient light. The general kitchen ceiling light that lets you move around safely even when the other lights are off.

A woven pendant light plays two roles in this system at once: it gives the dining zone a soft, diffused glow, and it works as a piece of interior decor even during the day when the light is off. We have a separate ceiling lamps guide covering the general principles; this article focuses specifically on the kitchen.

Pendant lights over the dining table: height and size

If you only remember two numbers from this article, make it these.

Height: 65 to 80 cm from the tabletop to the bottom edge of the shade. At this height the lamp lights the table, does not glare into your eyes, and does not block the view across the table. Hang it higher and the light spreads across the room, losing the intimate mood; hang it lower and it gets in the way.

Width: roughly half to two thirds of the table width. Over a round table 90 to 110 cm across, a shade 50 to 60 cm in diameter looks right. For example, the palm rope pendant light MIERA OSTA or the rattan pendant light PUMPURS are exactly this scale.

For a long table, one large pendant in the middle is often not the best answer: the ends of the table stay in shadow. Two identical pendants, each over its own third of the table, light it more evenly and look intentional.

One more reason to choose a handwoven shade over the dining table: this is the only lamp in your home that sits this close to eye level. Seated at the table, the weave texture and the pattern of the fibers are within arm's reach, so the quality of the material shows more here than in any other room.

Kitchen island lighting: a row of pendants

A kitchen island calls for a different approach than the dining table: the surface is longer, and it doubles as a work area.

Several smaller pendants in a row. The classic solution is two or three identical pendant lights, 25 to 45 cm in diameter. An odd number almost always looks more natural: three pendants for a longer island, two for a shorter one.

Spacing and height. Leave 60 to 75 cm between the centers of the pendants, and keep the bottom edge of the shades 75 to 90 cm above the island surface, slightly higher than over a dining table, because you usually stand while working at an island.

Identical shades create rhythm. A row of matching woven shades is one of the most effective kitchen lighting ideas. This is exactly what our set of five round rattan lampshades OGA is for, combined with the five-pendant cord set: the cord length is adjustable, so each shade can hang at exactly the right height.

If your ceiling has only one electrical outlet, use a cord set with a single mounting point to hang several pendants, or ask an electrician to add outlets. It is a small job that completely changes how the kitchen looks.

Which woven material works in a kitchen

A kitchen is a more demanding environment for natural materials than a living room: there is steam, temperature swings, and airborne grease. The good news: a well-chosen and well-placed woven shade lasts for years in a kitchen.

Rattan is the first choice for kitchens. Its surface is smooth and dense, so dust and residue simply wipe off. Rattan lampshades are also the most durable mechanically.

Bamboo is similarly practical: a hard, smooth surface that does not mind regular cleaning.

Seagrass handles kitchen humidity well thanks to its naturally waxy surface.

Softer, fluffier weaves such as raffia are better saved for the bedroom or living room. Our natural materials guide covers every material in detail.

The most important rule: never hang a woven lamp directly above the stove. Heat, boiling pots, and grease vapor are a job for the extractor hood, not for natural fiber. Over the table, the island, or the center of the room, a woven lamp is completely safe.

Cleaning is simple: dust once a week with a soft brush or dry cloth, wipe once a month with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry. Never soak the shade or use aggressive cleaners.

Bulbs and light temperature for the kitchen

Even the best lamp can look wrong with the wrong bulb, so let's finish with a few practical pointers.

Use LED bulbs only. This is not just about the electricity bill: LED bulbs barely heat up, which makes them the only safe choice for natural woven shades. Most of our lamps take standard E27 bulbs.

Warm light in the dining zone (2700 to 3000K). Warm white light creates a cozy atmosphere and flatters both the food and the people around the table. For worktops, slightly cooler light (3000 to 4000K) gives better color rendering while chopping and cooking.

Brightness. Over a dining table, 400 to 800 lumens (roughly a 6 to 10 W LED) is enough. If the weave is dense, pick a brighter bulb; with an open weave, even a lower wattage gives plenty of light.

An open weave casts patterned shadows in the evening. This is one of the most beautiful effects of a woven pendant: switch it on and a delicate pattern of shadows appears across the walls and ceiling. To amplify the effect, choose a decorative filament LED bulb without an extra diffuser. And a dimmer lets the same lamp serve a family dinner and a quiet evening for two.
